Lost all the charm of the original, tried too hard to look good but ended up clunky and cluttered. Also, SAM is SURFACE TO AIR MISSILE. IT DOES'T ATTACK THE GROUND. This has bugged me since the first game, seriously.
This is a great real game. It's a game about odds, and even if the odds are in your favor, you can still get screwed. Even with the best cards, you can still lose out due to dumb luck or someone who's hands was just a little better. That's life, deal with it, it's all one big crap shoot anyhow.
I've always wanted to play magic against a bot, using Portal cards where the stack doesn't matter, and there are no fast spells. Oh, and never have to worry about your mana base so it's super easy.
I wish the challenges were more of a challenge rather than a crap shoot. So many are "Hope your opponent doesn't have any attack spells on his first action." in which you will reload until you get lucky.
Very shallow game, and I don't mean to insult, what I mean is there's no depth to it. It's a very simple give and take game. There's no strategy or complexity to it. There's no status effects, hit chance, different weapon types, damage types, each character is boring, items are boring, enemies are boring, combat is boring, there's little freedom for players so it's even more restrictive.
Some things are taken out, like more detailed information on movement penalties, ammo, fuel, fog of war/vision. These were some things in Advance Wars I liked and miss. I haven't played this enough to see much of the changes you have made (all infantry move 3, flac cannon can't hit bombers, can repair anywhere, rockets can hit air and ground units, tracking which makes me wonder about fog of war. Is it in here? Stealth land units that commandos can use tracking against?) All in all, it only makes me want to play Advance Wars, probably mostly because it's more familiar, but also because this doesn't seem to bring anything all that exciting or interesting to make me want to play it more than Advance Wars.
It's an OK game, but it only makes me want to play Advance Wars and put this down. If it wasn't for the card or badges, I probably wouldn't be playing this right now. Not bad, but doesn't strike me as all that great. 3/5
For all those people complaining about a pausing penalty, it's because if you spam the pause button you could play the game in slow motion. Either give a minor penalty (big enough to notice but not enough to kill your score), or no pausing at once.
