the stuff in the crater DID mean something. All the heads were just the population of the planet and it explains: they are trying to collect one of every existing species for some reson, so they used a gravitational field to pull the military ship in and collect the crew. you got caught in the field. you escape. end.

WOO! i have a really cool glitch! sometimes when i pick ppl up i only pick up theyre heads and the rest of their bodies stay on the ground! it looks like theyre beheaded! and then when i drop their heads the rest of the bodies are pulled towards the heads!
