My game hasn't actually frozen. I just can't access any of its functions, since the King popped up with an empty speech bubble (there's no option to close it). When I reload the game, it goes directly to this situation.

how often does it save? I lost a day and a half of work because it didnt save... that sucks.

There was a bug, but it is fixed now. This time you lost the time but the next time it will be calculated properly since you got the new version. Try to refresh your browser and you will see that it works :)

can you increase the amount of money or essence used in crafting?
I will upload a new version of game today. You will have a new way to spend your extra tree essence.
