Okay, Killer Byrne's tips are REALLY useful. Upvote him. However, if you do have high enough damage and armor thanks to the golden ticket, you can use an elixir when you get really low hp.
Retaining all items, skills, levels, upgrades, etc. makes playing through on a different difficulty obsolete; New game+ and level select cannot coexist happily. It feels like a more restricted level select. Also, level select without boss refights feels even more barren than the rest of the boringly OP gameplay.
