I use tanks to demolish stuff. as they have higher hp and dont die easily with objects falling on them.
I use spies on levels with hordes of enemies, actually i dont like spies.
I use heli to almost all; combats, saving units and getting stars

Whenever i save the vips with my heli i say "Commander, the vips are safe, lets blow up that 10 floor building with alot enemies on it!" then i grab my tank and BOOM
