Here's a suggestion. Try shoving all your buildings in the top right corner of your base and take the best tanks you can find and place them as your defenders.
Surpello, top left of the battle screen, though I don't know about upgrading them. Spend research points on what you use a lot. It doesn't really matter much; you tend to get a lot of them.
Zelos666, I somewhat agree, but the only stats that actually matter are magic and damage, because you can use potions to infinitely resurrect your heroes. This makes it so that the best heroes end up being the Assassin, the Rogue, and possibly, the Shaman, depending on which is upgraded and the enemies' stats.
I agree with gmaster. The game is pointlessly hard at times and often surprises the player with the enemies making a new path, which often isn't the most protected spot. I played the original, and I never had any real trouble with difficulty, but this game can just be annoying.
@ZombieGUY11, all the stuff the slot machines give you is for each individual character. Eventually, you'll have all the skins and there will be none left for you to get. It works fine.
It's not about the 5e mechanics for our gameplay. We're a traditional idle game in that sense. It's all the flavour text, enemies, area settings and Champions that are based on 5e stories and monsters that make the game Dungeons and Dragons.
A note for anyone who wants to play this game: avoid the jungle. The jungle has so many weak enemies that it reduces your speed of progression through the game.
