My strategy is to just upgrade my cannon and occasionally my engine and focus on taking down the enemy shield (the gold orbs).

Also I can use the "hold to flag" control scheme while I have the "mark first" control scheme.
The keyboard shortcuts don't work for the "flag first" control scheme. I am using Firefox 52 on a MacBook Air running OSX 10.
