What do the giant purple flowers do and why can't I upgrade them?

To add to simple harmonic: First unit should be Mammoth Turtle instead of Goblin. Besides that, good.
I loved this game! Very fun! I keep playing over and over again to try and beat my old high score. So far 8158m is my best.
The key is to buy and use in this order: Lift, Ski, Freaky. Use all 3 Lift as soon as you fire out of the gun and you're golden!
