Why do people assume lag is the game's fault. This game has no lag or jerkiness whatsoever on a 4 year old 2ghz laptop running win XP, even with default hi quality setting. If it lags it's not the game, it your machine.

You should choose vs. CPU, 2 player option is for 2 people at the same PC.
