For those who are attempting to do this tutorial. Remember to have the "otherwise if" and "if" and "otherwise" brackets appropriately placed. Sorry for double post, my last comment was not clear.
Positioning indeed matters a ton. Lots of times, the wasted hours spent on debugging end up being a search for a simple thing out of place... just be glad this isn't direct coding, so it's not a semi-colon or similar near-impossible-to-find issue ;).
For those who are attempting to do this tutorial. Remember to have the "otherwise if" and "if" and "otherwise" brackets appropriate. It took me long time to figure out what I was doing wrong and how to fix it. But its the learning process. When you make mistakes you learn even more from it. Moving to the next tutorial!
I don't know where the receiver " when this hears text" is? In tutorial it shows its under behavior -> State palette. Due to the updates, it's not there. What should I do?
So far I am finding this tutorial a bit challenging compared to the last two. When you want me to move things around using "shift" or "alt," I need to pay very close attention to where I am moving it to. Hopefully it will get easier.
Holding "shift" allows you to move only one piece of code (if you DON'T hold it down, it will move all of the codes that follow it too). Holding alt makes a quick copy of the code; that alone can increase coding speed drastically. If you watch the stream carefully, you'll see I use both proliferantly.
I just finished the tutorial 2. Now this is next on my list. Making progress so far. I hope once i complete all the tutorial I can transfer my knowledge in making my own games.
Yay! I completed this tutorial. I have to say you learn a lot at first and feel overwhelmed, but once you reach the end product, it comes together. I am just worried I will forget what I learned, but I can always come back to the tutorial. Thanks and moving to the next one!
The learning cycle is indeed one of growth and relapse. Just make sure you're making two steps forward and only one step back. I've even had it happen to me (when I had to check tutorial 2.5 a while back I had totally forgotten about that option for making menus; I was pleasantly surprised and the brilliant simplicity of it... which I had forgotten about after teaching others about it :P).
I just finished the tutorial. It looked intimidating at first, but it did not take that long. I learned a lot. But you make coding fun and easy to understand. Time to move on to the next tutorial.
Coding itself seems intimidating at first (and learning new coding even after you know some code is still intimidating... at least for me). I'm glad I was able to simplify it to an accessible level though :).
Such a great tutorial for beginners. Easy to follow. Although few minor things have changed due to the new update of Stencyl software, but still this tutorial does its job. I am currently working through it and believe its definitely helping me learn the program. Thanks!
I am lost in slide 29. The block that says " set [last created actor] to level [] I cant find that. It said created few slides back, but I don't see it...
The premade behaviors were never meant to be changed around, which is why I am basically 100% against using them. I cannot count how many times I've had to help out new programmers who have tried to change them around and practically crashed them. This tutorial is designed so that you can make your OWN and LEARN how to do it. Don't try to do it with a premade. Understand how the coding works and make it yourself ;).
I started Stencyl two years ago. I finished the crash course and lost interest. Luckly I found this tutorial. I wish I found it earlier. You explain things well. I also like the humor you put in as well. I don't like video tutorials cause I have to pause and rewind, but this tutorial is so easy to follow. This tutorial is just what I needed to motivate me to make my first game. Thank you so much!!
I made a crash course too, it works just like yours. Thanks! But I don't think people would want this uploaded here since its just a course and not an actual game.
Aye, I use my programming as an example for students who don't see the value in trig ;).
