The game saves every 5 minutes plus every time you buy something. That said I just realized I should make the game save after resetting :-)

found the special abilities
when do the special abilities get unlocked?
Special abilities can be unlocked in Science tab. They became available as soon as you purchase 15, 35, 75 etc. buildings (structures). For example, to unlock Baking Gold 1 special ability - you should purchase 15 gold pans.
