If someone dies for no good reason don't bother to go back to a previously saved game, it's NOT random. Or I'm so unlucky the same guys dies 20 times in a row at turn 7. I counted.
Think positive. If you name your city "Arkham" or "Derry" or maybe "Amityville" people will see the zombie infestation as an improvement and be happier.
When Gustav shows up always take the food. You'll have more people for scavenging and you'll find more stuff to trade for more food. He probably makes sausages out of zombies, but your folk will never know.
After losing 6 times against the caretaker & hounds team (1st turn Felicity dies, 2nd turn Veradux dies, 4th turn I die) I decided to have a training fight. I got to fight the caretaker & hounds team for training. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
Sonny and Veradux spent the month between the two games getting totally wasted with booze, drugs and hookers, and this explains why they both got back to level 1 and have no money nor equipment.
