Actually a lot of people use it, since the later waves will give more cash. Or maybe they're trying to set an high score.

chwooly: with new uppdate, gold is now so slow that even a pentium 66 win 3.11 could run the game. maybe gold was bugged but going from speed 5 to speed 1 is really not enjoyable at all. + no assimilation reward (a poor building and a single crap mob.....)
