The suggestion of recopilating all counter gems when you smash 5 gems is only useful when the enemy doesn´t have low live, because his next movement will be smash live. If he smash an atack gems, you will give him back an at least a 400 % damage.
Another suggestion is to recopilate all counter when you smash a 5 gems. Normaly you´ll get a 400% counter damage.
