there is no cap, but once you get max assignable points per level up there isn't much point to keep raising int, once you have 95% to hit you don't need perception, once you have 75%dodge and 95% crit you don't need agility.
to the "unplayable past level 3 comment" - it gets easier the farther in, the shop pays you to buy items, you get 75%dodge, 90%+crit and 95% to hit by level 26...
getting swarmed by spiders isn't a problem, if you end your turn 2 spaces away from them they don't have enough action points to make an attack...if you get backed into a wall just walk through the spiders ;)
Yeah, it is a well designed game, but way too long (you are just doing the same thing over and over...) Playing 70 similar level 8 times each just gets boring :O
