leppy, you spend money to use internet bandwidth to play this. You spent money to buy a computer for things that include playing this. Why would no one put in a few extra dollars to get some bonuses in a game they like?
@Stuffo, it's for when you get items from things ingame like events or packages. For example, if you bought the christmas package, you'd receive all the items in the gift chest. Also, back when you got the dungeon from getting level 20 with a ninja, the key would be given to you in the gift chest.
Part 2 of the comment: There is a better version called the Golden LockPickAxe that acts as a Golden Pickaxe AND a Golden Lockpick in one tool. That was obtained from the recently disc Slime Box, and can also be crafted by a Golden Pickaxe+Standard Lockpick, which would be a VERY stupid idea, seeing as how the Golden Pickaxe is so rare, and much more valuable than the GLPA.
@whazzup, you can buy gems with ingame coins, and there's also many free gem opportunities (free kreds from surveys, daily reward, etc).
@ SouL_Ranger, there are daily quests.
@pyroa, you realize that you can buy gems with ingame coins, right? And that you can also get them in the daily present? This game is a lot more "free" (100% free, at that) than most other mmo's you'll find on kong.
calluum, there is already a chance (and a pretty decent chance too!) to get gems from the daily bonus. Also, you can buy gems with ingame coins, something that most games dont do with their premium currencies. Gamer is generous as it is.
