this game is very easy if all three guys dual wield and you have on guy who is really tanky and two others who are "glass cannons" and have high strength and speed
I didn't intend for it to be that overt -- it's never explicitly explained just what exactly he's doing, but it's otherwise implied that he's up to no good! :-P But yeah, it is intended to be the same character. It's a sort of reverse-redemption story backward through time, or something?
