Hobbies are still horribly unfair. They increase exponentially, so adding the linear boost of gilding only pushes the problem back a few levels -- 4 to be precise... 4 doublings makes 16x.
I think it would fix it to allow a hobby to be gilded multiple times, and additional diamonds to be purchased for in-game cash. High level hobbies would still be difficult/slow to obtain since you'd still have to earn huge stacks of cash, but you'd finally be able to become a wizard before the sun burns out.
Oji Panda (designer) here. You're correct. But this isn't the final balancing for the game by a long shot. Apologies for the delay - the final game will have lots more girls and achievements, which will allow players to accumulate higher prestige and free diamond totals (which allow you to fight better against the exponential curve). The final balancing will not involve the heat death of the universe.
