Ah, so the Xes are the costume pieces found in the chests and the question marks are the ones gotten by defeating the enemies. That seems to be how it works.
Really? This is a "fun" game? No doubt that it's creative and innovative with the animation and the music stopping or going backwards, but honestly, just walking and jumping and collecting music notes? Where's the fun?

It does need to label the items. That was confusing.
Oh, I see . . . the left and right hand . . . i wasn't thinking about that. You got me! I tend to wear the gloves that can be worn on either hand most of the time.
