My tactic: Give all the survivors the best guns! All the player needs is the chainsaw! But if there are any leftover weapons, don't be afraid to pick it up!
Caught in an ambush? Completely surrounded? Companion down? Hit F5/ refresh, load your game. The horde dissapears and your Companion is back on his/her feet once again :)
Be very cautious when playing for an hour or more. Once every hour and a half(including pause time) The zombies jump through the cieling or ambush you in the street. Hope this helps.
