Found an interesting bug/exploit on accident. *warning* this pretty much breaks your game data.
After getting your spirit, complete the next level up to defeating the boss but do not go through the door. Instead, use your spirit to enter the special spirit world level. You will start in the room with the spell and save point. Grab the save crystal (probably ignore the spell since you should have chaos).
You can go and fight the spirit collector if you like, but to activate the exploit, refresh the browser page to start the game. When you start, you will appear to be in the spirit world, but it operates under many of the rules of normal levels:
*Ghosts are still the only enemies
*Doors will now appear, but when the ghosts are defeated they will drop keys
*ghosts in the same room will drop keys forever, allowing you to hold as many keys as you like
Some weird glitch allowed me to collect 4 extra supplies just before going to Jonestown. The search menu came up twice before a level, and then a third time when I died and chose to retry. It also allowed me to travel after the third instance without replaying the level... I won in 31 days with 719 zombies killed. Probably somewhat low since the game glitched.
Has anyone else noticed that repeatedly combining level 1 gems with level 3 gems seems to be a game breaking strategy for both of these games? Especially if you use dual gems in this game and have the massive boost to damage/range/reload. I haven't tried a lot in this game so far, so there might be a better approach, but so far this has been the best I could find. Easily beat first two arcane guardians using only one gem.
To level a tower well, don't worry about the grade. Just get the highest grade possible without effort (usually 6-8 range end game), then just combine with lvl 1 crystals. Use ctrl to create a full panel of lvl 1 crystals and then combine all your high level gems with them. Note that you must combine high to low and not reverse or else you reset your stats. I believe this is most cost effective. Note that 6+1+1 is more powerful than 6+2, and about the same cost.
There is no need to banish the last boss. Just get a few crystals really op. I used 6 (two were multi to use all 8 colors) and just kept leveling until the max damage for each was in the 500-1000 range and the attack speeds were high.
I liked shift 3 better as well. Made a level:

Is it intentional that when I completed this game's achievements kongregate suggested that I play this game again for my next achievements? It is like some sort of silly time loop. Or maybe it is just a coincidence?
Huge flaw in the end game not allowing you to submit score. I scored 115000 and got bored and hit end game to get my badge and it erased my score and did not allow me to submit. I'm not going to sit through that again for another fifteen minutes.
