you may consider to make mixed turns, based on the speed of single units, such as heroes of might and magic. simultaneously turns, with all the units moving at the same time, makes the game nearly impossibile to play...you will be ever outnumbered if you wanna upgrade!
the save game must be after the upgrade window. everytime I loose a battle, I'll quit the game because re-upgrading your units another time is pretty boring.
seems that if you want the badge, you need to start collecting the droppings after clicking "new game" in the menu, and not selecting a scene to start by pressing the Enter key...probably ^^
