Best unit depends on armor and whatnot. An Axe Thrower could stop a Giant Troll, if the Troll has low armor and the Axe Thrower has high marksmanship and armor./..
A town thing where you can put garrisons for when territories are attacked is a good idea, and make territories be attacked by enemies, so the game is a little harder...
