Adding on to what MrKytra said, programming and hosting costs MONEY, and not just sponsorship and ad space will pay for it. Hosting costs a lot AND the programming companies, like GrubbyGames, don't just make games for other people. They need MONEY to LIVE! If this is there job, then they need to make a profit off of it. AND, only certain people who make the games read the comments, and re-posting comments will get you BANNED. So ask yourselves, is an ignored message for something that won't happen for a few years really worth getting banned?
Guys, if you want free thrusters, just wait. After a while, once the more useful stuff (you can see a list of them by clicking the sponsorship link and the highlighted 'listed here') becomes available, thrusters will become a normal item. Plus, if membership WAS free right now, there would be no game.Making games costs money.
I used to like this game for a while, and only got to lvl 19 when I stopped. But, when I saw it was on Kongregate a year later. I wanted to see if it changed at all, and I got hooked again. It's acually pretty awesome! I just hope that they put Kingdom of loathing on here too.
