Try unequipped the steel sword. You can attack even if the sword is unequipped by hitting the z button next to an enemy, equipping is only used so you don't accidentally talk to npcs or enter buildings, and to select a weapon to attack with that's not the automatic choice (the most damage-dealing weapon).
