It means "No, you cannot". Non-donators always will be just punching bags in this game. Because best weapons and best armors (not "a little bit better", but drastically) are ONLY for real money. Completely typical pay-to-win.
The potions seem to work fine while testing. The only issue is that they don't work inside of the forge. If you crafted a health potion, try clicking another tile, then using the health potion. That should fix any issues with the health potions and unfocusing.
What specifically about the health potion's don't work?
If you are unable to obtain any, make sure that you have 2 mushrooms and enough coins first.
If you are unable to use them in battle, try pressing the space key.
