Kkleites, one of the top comments, doesn't realize that in many ways drugs are the same as self mutilation. They both are coping mechanisms, and the story wouldn't be any different if that thing wrapped to his arm since he was a teenager was a tourniquet, and he missed an artery with that overdose of crank/heroin/etc., as opposed to a razor. Either way, the story is about realizing that he didn't need those things to be himself.
I feel bothered that my first choice was to save myself, but playing again to do the other choice out of compassion for my new AI companion, I feel better, yet... still completely disturbed!
