I got stuck on level 40 for a while and was thinking it was bugged too, but it's not. You have to just keep attacking the same piece of his shield, at first it looks like it's doing nothing but eventually it'll go away. If you don't do it quick enough you die.

If I could give this game 6 stars, I would. Amazing.

Survival mode is ridiculous and simply unenjoyable. It would be awesome if you got a bit more than 100g per round, but christ.
