In order to extend your network faster don't use a straight line. If you use a diagonal you get a 45-45-90 triangle which means it is your given distance x square root of 2 giving you a longer path.

I have spotted one issue, if your rocket is partially destroyed and you hit a repair kit the picture does not change back to a healed rocket.
