The crafting interface could use some updating. Clicking a craft item should add it to the matrix, I shouldn't need to drag it there. Additionally there should be a repeat last recipe button that auto fills the matrix for me.
Make sure you click Ok after you add men.. If you add men and click end turn the number of men will go up, but if you attack/move/get attacked they will disappear.
