There is a glitch to beat the game usnig 1 item.
First, colect the apple east of the first castle area on that tree, you should figure out how to get there easily. Then go back to the first castle and give the monk on the 2nd floor the apple. Continue to go right until you are outside. Then KEEP going right, until you hit a castle wall and a autosave point.
Jump on the rocks up to the 1st log. Walk over to the wall on the log still, sill in the area able to see the autosave-eye, make your character walk right then jump. BOOM you'll appear into a place and just jump up the logs and you'll be at the final boss.
