Have you ever played Amorphous+ ?
You unlock upgrades but you can only use 2 at the same time, and they are pretty much just powerups, maybe it could have been a good 'upgrade' sistem for this game.
in the newgrounds version there was an issue about magic that really disturbed me, when i got in a certain `treasure` room (i think the first one you get a red item) you lost your magic.. so i had almost all my equips with proc and it turned useless and i died after that room...
