@Kvaak: nice guide though you've made a little mistake at the beginning. You write, build a hut on turn 3 and another one the next turn.. which is not possible. on t1 you fight with swordsman+1 militia, earning 100 gold. next turn you earn 200 more gold and buy the hut. On turn 4 you have 250 gold, lacking 100 for the 2nd hut. The other instructions then can't follow anymore, coz you'll get the Lumberjack before you can buy the hut, which now costs a ton more (considering the 3 free huts raise their price).

http://pastebin.com/ERKNhdZs - rudimentary VH strategy outline. Don't expect to beat VH any time soon even if you follow it as there's a lot of luck involved. It's a tried and tested formula though and it's definitely possible, if hard, to beat VH with it.

its annoying how the tempo of the moving units is such that I sometimes lose because my units walk into enemy range so enemy gets first strike.

My record for very hard is 37. I could get more but I can't really imagine beating it all the way to level 50. I guess I would need some insane rng.

...waste of time. Why recreate an existing game in a shoddier, below student game project level standard when you could actually make something GOOD? something ORIGINAL. instead of piggybacking on the success of others like yet another game cloning leech in the industry.

I like this game overall, but the amount of luck, particularly in the beginning, is frustrating. About 80% of my games go: Start, hire 2 peasants, end year. Attacked by 1 militia. Send 1 militia, die. Start over.

The only reliable way that I have found to beat normal is with russians and selecting the extra farms option as my first tech, and then focusing exclusively on paladins/exorcists/angels. Anyone else got any normal/harder winning strategies?

The enemy is attacking with 30 knights, 40 swordsmen, and 30 archers! ... or sounds like 100 zombie chickens says this magic scroll of mine. Muhahaha!
5/5 proof that a game doesn't need much to be hours of fun and replayable.

Good tip for beginning, buy a stable then a cow shed. Stable allows you to buy knights and not get slaughtered by the extremely steep enemy unit curve, and also the cow shed increases your max food for year, and is cheap and best bought early

Great game, pretty interesting mechanics. I suggest adding in a formation editor. Sometimes, my hydras would just get stuck behind a bunch of minotaurs and become useless. Also, the Scroll of Shrinking (if you save it until the final battle) is just way OP, the enemy barely does any damage to you (kind of weird, the enemy sends 4 hydras during year 40 and a bunch of minotaurs at you before year 50, but only uses the three weakest units during the final battle).

I would like to play the 100 years survival, (though I think this should be endless) and Invasion of Zombie Chickens modes even if there are impossibly unbalanced so long as you let us know it is currently unbalanced.

@Chaflan: Courage is a poorly chosen descriptor. It determines the likely hood of the unit advancing. Thus archers with courage 1 stay right at the back.

Nice game but the AI is so dumb. The militia is understandable, but others like swordsmen should keep better formation.

It really ticks me off when my army CAN beat the enemy but the stupid spawn pattern makes it so the enemy gangs up on them.

Just won VH with Celts after hours and hours of miserable failure. VH start is extremely frustrating as most nations just have to keep startscumming until you don't lose a peasant on turn 1 although there's a lot of luck involved after that too. Year 25 in particular could probably use some toning down.
Overall I like this minimalistic gem. Looking forward to further polishing.

One of the two most awesome abilites ZOMBIE CHICKENS!(At first I thought they're just like other units they die they never comeback but it gives chickens per year, its a meat sheild genrator) And People Preach (Makes enemy militia join you+and a discount of peasants)

I love this game to death! It's easy to get wrapped up in the game as each year brings more money and more enemies to fight off. The game is pretty extensive but I am always looking forward to new content.

@Voidsword the peasants rend unto whoever killed your knights, unless you have the Appeal religious perk, in which case some of the less sane peasants try to avenge the army.

It seems a little stupid to game-over attempting a scouting dungeon which would theoretically be some distance from your Castle, besides the fact that an army wipeout doesn't mean I don't still have a horde of peasants I wasn't utilizing that can stand in for militiamen while I build up my army again for defence. The idea that without soldiers, soldiers which can be rebuilt the very next turn, your entire civilization instantly collapses is a bit absurd.

if you guys get to steam and then steam achievements. plox fix that you wont get that you have survived full 50 years when you play at special game at 25 years mode. you get at here badge from just that mode. 25 years gets you 50 years badge.

I take back my comment. You just really have to focus on getting a swordsman/knight out ASAP for hard mode. Then... it's really tough, we'll see how far we get!

Hard and Very Hard Mode.... is kind of impossible. Unless I'm doing something wrong, you're basically bombarded by swordsmen right from the start. You either need luck to get by with minimal militia in the early battles or... I don't know. :(
