Thanks for all the people who have played my game and given me feedback. I wanted to take a moment to explain a few things about this game. It was made for the 6th Annual Midwest Game Fair, over the course of about a week. I had never used Flashpunk, and wanted to challenge myself to use a new technology. I didn't initially plan on releasing it publicly. But then at the competition, due to a lack of 2D Entries (from what I understood, there were three total), the category was simply removed...THE DAY OF THE EVENT. So I spent a week working on this game, for seemingly nothing. So I decided to post it on here, mainly to share with friends and family.
I appreciate all the feedback, especially criticisms. Everyone hates to hear someone bash their work, but if it usually deserves at least some of it. So please, continue to post any annoyances, what you liked, what you didn't, and if you discover any bugs.
How to Play
Instructions:
Movement - WASD Keys
Refill Lantern - SPACE BAR
- Collect Oil Lanterns to allow you to refill your lantern.
- Find 3 GEMS in each floor, then use the the stairs to proceed to the next floor.
- If your light goes out, it is likely that you will be eaten by a grue.
- Lava baths are bad. Avoid touching lava.
Notes:
Upon dying, you will be returned to the start of the current floor with two oil refills. The entire level is reset, so you will have to collect all GEMS again in order to proceed.
Developer Updates
Update โ 3/13/2011
-โโโโโโโโโโโ-
- As pointed out, the player sprite was in fact a Final Fantasy character. I apologize for using it. When I created the game, initially it was for a closed competition, and I was working on a short time frame, so I just grabbed the first character sprite I found, with the intention of replacing it, but never found the time to do so. I have now fixed this, and while my art skills are severly lacking, I think he turned out rather nicely.
- Fixed a bug I discovered where the game could crash during the splash screen if you hit the mute volume key.
- Added key binds for the arrow keys as well. Youโre welcome loulubie!
- Due to player feedback, your oil is no longer reset to 2 upon dying.

It's a nice idea, but it needs a lot of work and some non-ripped sprites.

Yeah...good job but a thing to be added is the lava light...i mean the lava isnt turned off it should light a certain area in the range of it and the light...well...its fair...but the thing u might want to add is limited light i mean to lignt only the section u are in...not over the walls, and another ideea might be torches in the cave...i mean some1 must have passed thru it somehow...and from the pervious ideea there should be random spawning adventurers looking for treasure...and from the "treasure" i mean another ideea (u know what i mean). and monsters, quests, weapons,a storyline...theres alot much to add but...u got all the time in the world to make them ;) Good luck in the future anyway good game 5/5

Couldn't you make your own sprite instead of sporking an FF one?

Maybe make a shop every so often; gems seem pointless other than completing a level. Also create a storyline; why is this guy in a cave? Why didn't he bring a weapon if it was dangerous, and why does he keep just going down? Also maybe a pause button would be nice.
