Nice game for beginners! Reminds me of http://www.codecombat.com where you can learn Python, JavaScript, CoffeeScript or experimental LUA (Game Scripting Language for many MMORPGs). They also have some multiplayer on the page so if you are interested in learning other programming languages too => check them out!

This is Awesome! My son regularly programs in Scratch and we have been looking for a fun way to learn a new language THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!

Is there an ETA on the update? I also read a comment you replied to having "last update" on it. Does this mean the nest one ail also be the last?

You should change the rite of passage to the WRITE of passage! (good one right? [please like it { it would make me happy } ] )
Here you go! This is one of my favorites to listen to while programming. (Disclaimer: this is not my youtube video). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTszj4iZUMw

I'm currently working on a series of walkthrough videos. I'm only at the Elite Training Zone, but I'll keep working on it.

It is amazing to me that this game is over a year old, yet the developer regularly replies to comments still. You rock Gregory Carlson! Other programmers should take notes from you!

Oh, scratch that. Turns out Ludum Dare Game Jams have nearly zero regulations besides decency. So, yeah, internet may get quite a few more games and some famous devs everywhere by the time this update finishes.

I'm itching to finish learning AS3. It will spawn a bazillion new flash games all over the internet. Anyone above 18 can even enter Game Jams and become insta-famous!

This is amazing. I am unsure of when you last checked these posts, but I am incredibly happy with this game. This is exactly what I yearn to do, teach with games. Bravo, 5 stars and a favorite.

It actually feels extremely strange how we get overly-excited in this game. We're just taking part in a free online Computer-Based Training course for programming in AS3.
P.S. How long till the next 50 lessons are written?
I'm glad you are excited! I am 50 lessons away from being done, after suffering from some writer's block. It will take me about 2-3 hours to write them, an hour to write the hints, 2-3 hours of testing and debugging, 2 hours of making art and about 5 hours of code and then it will be done. I am aiming for this (Ninja Edit: week)!

For those who don't know their percentages.. which I would hope you do if you are trying to become a programmer on 3/10 building a tip calculator part 1 it is stated in the lesson:
Good. Now, we need to calculate the sales tax. Make a new variable called salesTax, of type Number, and set it equal to 8%. Careful here, if you type in 8, it won't work. How do we express 8% as a decimal? In your answer, please put a zero before the decimal point.
it should say add a 0 before AND after the decimal point. for 8% it should show as 0.08 if you were to take the lesson text and just add the one 0 you would have 0.8 which is 80%. granted I am sure the dev for this game is just wanting to make sure you are placing an integer before the decimal to ensure that you are using a "proper" integer that all programming languages will recognize, but some people tend to take things a bit literally and differently. Again, thank you to Gregory for making this game, thus far it is quite helpful.

I REALLY LOVE THIS GAME, THANKYOU VERY MUCH. Terimakasih banyak kawan semoga karyamu ini bisa menciptakan banyak programmer dahsyat. Hope that this creation of yours will make some marvelous programmer like you^^

small issue with 4/8 on strings and variables. you ask us to concatenate dollarSign + userMoney so it looks like it does in the game.. in the game there is a space between the dollarSign and userMoney, so therefor it should technically be dollarSign + " " + userMoney.. however this is a wrong answer.. maybe I am being picky.. but I think I should get bonus points for that one LOL... otherwise in game it should be $300 vs $ 300... thank you for this game though.. it is very helpful thus far.

On Loop Lava Land's Rite of Passage Part 3 we have:
How many times will the following loop run?
1 for (var i:uint = 0; i = 7; i++) {
Isn't the condition i = 7 already false in the beggining?( 0 = 7 FALSE) And if it runs one time it will stay false( 1 = 7 FALSE), what am I missing here?

I thank you so much for the help and i see the community agrees. Originally i was looking for videos on youtube on how to code a flash game, but you provided the info right here! The game was interesting and at the same time very informative through all the lessons. Thank you for helping us all out!

Is it mean for me to ignore the arena that someone put so much work into making. I really just want to learn to program. I don't need an arena to give me the motivation.

There is a programming mistake on Lava Loop Land's Rite of Passage (parts 14, 15 and 16). The variable cartItems never decreases, which would cause the loop to always add the price of the item in the position 4 of the array in an infinite loop. ^-^
To continue, type: Double check your loops!

Hey guys! Thanks for your patience with this update. When I first started writing lessons for this game, it would usually take 3-5 lines to explain the code. But now, I am writing up to 30 lines of code for one lesson, which takes a lot longer. I have about 50 more lessons to write, so it should be coming soon! I'm trying to do a good explanation of basic Object Oriented Programming (OOP) so I hope you are excited. Best, - GC

In the store upgrades, I can buy upgrades for the Antivirus software, and the price will increase, but the relative strength stays at 0.

The first page of the maths review claims that Math.pow(d) returns the square root of d. You might want to look at that.

Greg, the rite of passage for the For/While loops needs to specify that it wants a "for" loop on the 9th screen, I believe. I ragequit many times thinking I had miswritten something in my "while" loop, only to find afterwards it was a for loop it wanted.

Greg, Stuxnet is a network worm, not exactly a virus, far more deadly than a mere virus. Also, notice the correct name. You don't want to get it angry at you.

This is a great game but where would you go to make a game i'm only level 154 and i'm not sure if theres a lesson that covers it but do you have to download certain software or go to a certain website or do you do something else
you can either download flashDevelop which can make basic stuff (unless you are a more advanced programmer). You can also download the thirty day free trial of flash professional CC. My game does not (yet) give enough lessons for you to be able to make your own programs, but I hope to change that by adding new content. I "rent" flash professional for about $20 a month.

On level 4 of Array Caverns (.length), the last screen doesn't tell you to give the variable a type, but the answer checker wants it to be of type String. Just a minor thing.
