also if you could have the help button only take one heart ,(not having it increment down ever time we click on it),that would be appreciated.

To Geripii - You have to put the variables in the right order, it tells you so right there "300$ would look silly":
private var displayMoney:String = dollarSymbol + userMoney;
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
Every time you call for a hint it removes 2 HP instead of one. Is this intentional? (note: I would prefer if the hint cost scales up depending on zone, but whatever)
I made the hint cost 2 to mimic the time it takes to look up forums online to try to solve your problem when you are programming in real life. Since the levels are getting harder, I might add an upgrade soon that will allow you to buy a higher health cap though.

I am blocked at the variables part 7/11 what should I do? I tried to use the hint, but it was useless. please help me

Could anyone help me?
/String and Valuables/
4/8
Part 4/8 Using Strings and Variables
1 private var userMoney:Number = 300;
2 private var dollarSymbol:String = "$";
Great. Now we just need to put our $ string together with our variable. We can do this with concatenation. All you have to do is concatenate the two variables. Create a variable called displayMoney, of type String, and set it equal to the two variables concatenated. Make sure you write them in the correct order! 300$ would look silly. Check the hint if you need help.
private var displayMoney:String = userMoney + dollarSymbol;
this code don't work. what's the problem?

when I made it to the cave,seriously I hadn't had this much pressure since the last time I made it into the elite four battle in pokemon.
Excellent game,I was making a game in flash myself but didn't understand the code snippets much but thank you after only one level I begun to understand many things,the syntax and stuff.
Thank you very much because of you I will be able to make my game more easily and I am going to,definitely,give you a link once its made.
P.S:Please make the levels skippable because my computer has problems in saving it.Thanks
Thank you for the huge compliment! Good news, in the next update, I will make an "unlocked" version which will make all of the maps cheap and easy to get so that you can skip to the world that you were on. Thanks for playing. I'm looking forward to your game!

I may have found a bug.
Did you code the else statement on the function basics tower properly?
When I click on it, the locked statement comes up as before but I can get in.
P.S I have completed the Function basics levels, it it the tower with the reward glitch update for home that displays the locked information.
P.P.S I love this game and understand the time and effort put into coding this. Thank you for this experience of learning and fun.
Thanks, I will check into that. I wonder how many other programmers get such detailed bug reports on their games? "There might be something wrong with the else statement in your unlock function....." Edit: I fixed the error. I made the tower button, ItemK, when it should have been named ItemJ.

Danieltan, = is used when you set a value for a variable, == is used when comparing stuff, myVariable+=myOtherVariable; is just a shorthand way to type myVariable=myVariable+myOtherVariable; Hope that helps!

Level: Functionception Part 3/7
Code line 11: private VAR battleFunction():void {
Typo: Shouldn't 'var' be 'function'?

I am probably missing something, but functions with multiple inputs part 5/8 and 6/8, numberFunction is called, but coolFunction is named and used... I dont understand...Help

Hey Gregory so first : Thank you so much for your wondeful game I just love it. So much that I check everyday for an update and finish it as soon as it's out haha. Do you know when approximately the next update will be up? =D Again THANKS a lot! ^^

I'm now in Treasure Cave and I believe I will keep playing til it's finished. You've put this together pretty well. I've been programming for several years and I must applaud the way you've laid everything out. It's very easy to follow and it's a great structure as far as a game as well. Keep up the good work!!

Actually, as soon as you ragequit, you can lose health at any time by pressing enter. Once your health reaches 0 again, all of the clickable things disappear. Hope that helped.

Ah-ha. Found something. I went to the first lesson and ragequit. Then I kept pressing enter. When it got to 0, the back button disappeared.
8/10 evaluating functions? If you are referring to the "int", I actually meant that since we were working with negative numbers, or is there another uint that I missed?

I just released an update to my game! 50 new lessons on functions. However, I’m already thinking about the next installment. In the next update, expect some exciting new features:
*Mathelot, combine math with programming!
*A “back” button for levels you have already beaten.
*A new character to choose
*Classic vs. Unlocked mode. Lose your data and don’t want to beat the early levels again? This mode will make all maps cheap so you can skip back to where you were.
*Other things! Stay tuned! – Gregory

Oh, also, where is Mathelot? I don't see any map for it in the store, is it going to be introduced way later? (after The Timer Zone?)
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
Woo, waited for this update and played within 15 minutes of the update happening. Disappointingly small though. When is the next update, and how much more lessons will it contain? :D
hahaha. :) In reply to this and your other comment, Mathelot is coming. I've actually written some of the sections for it, but it wasn't complete which is why I couldn't release it at the same time as this. In terms of size and date, not sure yet because my brother is graduating and some other family things are happening. Soon though. I'll post a date on the opening screen when I know for sure. Thanks for playing!!!

You're my hero! Not because I really needed this, but because you took time to actually do this and for doing such a good job making it!
Thanks for being awesome!
Check out www.flashdevelop.org I just installed it for my laptop. It's a little detailed, and I'm going to release a tutorial soon for how to download it so that you can make things.

@rangerrecruiter
You can have him go through some trouble areas, and just copy and paste the text into a program like notepad, Thats what I did
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
This is an amazing instructional tool. Ive wanted to make a math based on for years but just never seem to get around to it. I had never considered making a programming one.

Gregory, great game and great tutorial. You have discovered a way to make learning fun for me and my oldest kid (he's 10, and has finished the first rite of passage on his own!) I have a "I'm too lazy to write" question for you; any way we can get the screen shots from the lessons in a pdf format? Yes, I'm too lazy to take all the damn notes I should be taking. Maybe upload to google docs or something?
I will not take offense if you berate me and tell me to stop being lazy, I can always make my kid write it all down!!
I am glad you and your son are enjoying it! Hahaha, to save your son's hand, I made the text in the game "selectable" so that you can copy and paste it to Microsoft Word or Notepad, or whatever application you use to make documents. Hope that helps.

@Andre1209
The problem is stating that it wants you to use the Trace(); function to send the value of totalBill to the output window. To use Trace(); you want to say: trace(varName); In this case we want to send the value of totalBill to the output window, so we would say trace(totalBill);

Seems to be a glitch in Array Caverns. The Treasure Cavern screen just shows a picture of a cave with no lessons available, while the Scary Cavern enemies' win counter is broken; it displays "undefined" wins, but when I win, it goes up to NaN (not a number).

Help! How do you get the the nest training zone!? I cant get to it, I really want to carry on with this but I can't because i can't get to the next part!

There will be a new-ish version on December 1. I won't be quite done with 3.0, but I promised I would have new stuff, so I will release 3.0 in two waves. Expect about 50ish new lessons on Functions! Happy Thanksgiving to the Americans! To the rest of the world, have an awesome fourth Thursday of November!
