Under rating threshold (show) For those who don't know their percentages.. which I would hope you do if you are trying to become a programmer on 3/10 building a tip calculator part 1 it is stated in the lesson: Good. Now, we need to calculate the sales tax. Make a new variable called salesTax, of type Number, and set it equal to 8%. Careful here, if you type in 8, it won't work. How do we express 8% as a decimal? In your answer, please put a zero before the decimal point. it should say add a 0 before AND after the decimal point. for 8% it should show as 0.08 if you were to take the lesson text and just add the one 0 you would have 0.8 which is 80%. granted I am sure the dev for this game is just wanting to make sure you are placing an integer before the decimal to ensure that you are using a "proper" integer that all programming languages will recognize, but some people tend to take things a bit literally and differently. Again, thank you to Gregory for making this game, thus far it is quite helpful.

Under rating threshold (show) small issue with 4/8 on strings and variables. you ask us to concatenate dollarSign + userMoney so it looks like it does in the game.. in the game there is a space between the dollarSign and userMoney, so therefor it should technically be dollarSign + " " + userMoney.. however this is a wrong answer.. maybe I am being picky.. but I think I should get bonus points for that one LOL... otherwise in game it should be $300 vs $ 300... thank you for this game though.. it is very helpful thus far.

Under rating threshold (show) On Loop Lava Land's Rite of Passage Part 3 we have: How many times will the following loop run? 1 for (var i:uint = 0; i = 7; i++) { Isn't the condition i = 7 already false in the beggining?( 0 = 7 FALSE) And if it runs one time it will stay false( 1 = 7 FALSE), what am I missing here?

+ - !

(1)

Developer response from GregoryCarlson

Yeah, that is my mistake. I think I meant to type i < 7. I will fix that in the update.

Under rating threshold (show) I thank you so much for the help and i see the community agrees. Originally i was looking for videos on youtube on how to code a flash game, but you provided the info right here! The game was interesting and at the same time very informative through all the lessons. Thank you for helping us all out!

Under rating threshold (show) There is a programming mistake on Lava Loop Land's Rite of Passage (parts 14, 15 and 16). The variable cartItems never decreases, which would cause the loop to always add the price of the item in the position 4 of the array in an infinite loop. ^-^ To continue, type: Double check your loops!

Developer response from GregoryCarlson

Under rating threshold (show) Hey guys! Thanks for your patience with this update. When I first started writing lessons for this game, it would usually take 3-5 lines to explain the code. But now, I am writing up to 30 lines of code for one lesson, which takes a lot longer. I have about 50 more lessons to write, so it should be coming soon! I'm trying to do a good explanation of basic Object Oriented Programming (OOP) so I hope you are excited. Best, - GC

Under rating threshold (show) Greg, the rite of passage for the For/While loops needs to specify that it wants a "for" loop on the 9th screen, I believe. I ragequit many times thinking I had miswritten something in my "while" loop, only to find afterwards it was a for loop it wanted.

Under rating threshold (show) This is a great game but where would you go to make a game i'm only level 154 and i'm not sure if theres a lesson that covers it but do you have to download certain software or go to a certain website or do you do something else

+ - !

(-1)

Developer response from GregoryCarlson

you can either download flashDevelop which can make basic stuff (unless you are a more advanced programmer). You can also download the thirty day free trial of flash professional CC. My game does not (yet) give enough lessons for you to be able to make your own programs, but I hope to change that by adding new content. I "rent" flash professional for about $20 a month.

Fair critique - indeed, many games allow for text based imports. Unfortunately, game progress in my game is based off of indexing a 3-dimensional jagged array, and I do not know a clean way of translating this to text. I will make a last update without a text based solution, but my future games will allow this option, so thanks for the feedback, and sorry I can't be more helpful.

er, on that one I think you leave only type the text (leave out the semicolon). Sorry about the developer trolling there. :/

Under rating threshold (show) at first, i was unimpressed by the graphics, but i really enjoyed the step by step teaching. it was a lot of fun learning :) the only problem i have with it though, is that in the elite training? the second rite of passage... part 8/15, i don't think you can concatenate a string with a number

Under rating threshold (show) Hello Gregory, thank you so much for making this game, I'm 15 years old in high school right now, and I believe I want to be a computer programmer, but my school doesn't teach any classes on this sort of education due to low budgets. But now that I'm learning by playing this game I am really interested into probably going into this occupation. Thank you again. (also my name is Gregory as well, haha)

+ - !

Cool, great name! :) The world needs more programmers for sure. I recommend http://www.codecademy.com/ if you want to continue learning. I did not study programming in college, so you don't necessarily need to major in it to learn.

Under rating threshold (show) hi there @Gregory Carlson.. so I have a ton of stuff I'd love to talk to you about - regarding programming of course haha so I went to your website to contact you but as I'm sure you know it contains the answer to a question that I haven't come across yet (not so stoked it's at the top of your page) ! and some other things like script for a maze etc but no contact info or ways to contact .. nothing at all really. any who as I was saying, I love this program and am new to programming and would love you to email me or something? I'd feel awkward posting my email here so maybe meet me in chat sometime or something? Thank you, Dedicated noob programmer :)

Under rating threshold (show) just had an idea. let a player skip to the rite of passage level and if they can complete it then clear all the prior levels so they can move on faster? I've never forgotten logic operators, and although a good refresher, it was rather a bore. ;)

Under rating threshold (show) This is... actually a pretty great game for teaching code. I'm in my second year of coding now and this is solid with simple and easy to understand explanations on how things work and why they do what they do without throwing too much in your face right off the bat. Great job on this.
