glitch with the extra fortresses upgrade; when you save, it doesn't. got the upgrade, built a few extra forts, saved my game. when I came back I was back to having a max of two forts again. for some reason

Given one star literally because the enemy can send one-ship fleets at me and whittle down my vastly superior fleet, because my fleet all starts off together and well away from the enemy- except one ship, which starts right next to theirs and gets boarded and destroyed first turn. So stupid. Otherwise would have been maybe 3 stars.

The critical hit needs to be less powerful. A sloop got a critical hit on my galleon, which had full health, and it was killed. It would be better if it, at best, did 4x the amount of damage as normal, instead of just killing them instantly.

Was able to beat on hard level in 5. Mathematically, can't be surpassed.
Turns 3 and 4 were the toughest. Made it to 15 bases on 3 and had to defeat all other nations on 4. 5 was just a mop up of the rest.

I love the golden age of the piracy, but I have to admith that this game is too much easy and a little bit boring. And I don't think only because I've developed mainly military techs. Finally, I didn't see a lot of pirates.

Good ideas, definetly good game, but this needs a sequel with more options, achievements, a better thought out tree and starting options etc.
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
Also, the technology tree is imbalanced. Espionage would be useful in the beginning/middle of the game, but by the time you develop it the game is all but over.

Also, would like to see a ground combat option for attacking forts. (Roll up, hit the sword, charge across the sand, it's really just animation.)
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
The combat system needs a retreat/run away option. Likewise, the AIs need work, since even at the hardest level, the AI tactics seem to be "each combatant randomly fire at someone in range".
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
The battle screens are far to slow..it takes forever to do a battle that is not very entertaining in the first place. Besides that it's a fun game.
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
AI fail: It thinks it can win and attacks, but then decides it can't go under the fortresses, so sits at edge of combat. I wait. Forever. So I have to send out my ships to die. The AI still does not attack. Since there's no timeout or even any way to concede (I shouldn't lose, but would concede just to continue the game) the game is effectively stuck. Maybe I'll check this one again when it's had some time for updates.

nice... needs a few improvements (visible range, speed up fights, retreat, upgrade/destroy ships, etc) but decent start of a game... needs to be way longer though.... 3/5

like WTF????? pirates came and all 6 of my ship just disappears? owh great, go on France, take my land...i just fcking bought 4 fortress..i ain't got enough to get meself ships..
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
Pretty boring after while as AI is terrible. Its obvious that I could use 6 brigandines to sink galeon in one turn without it counterattacking, but AI does not attack me with these so I could easily win even outmatched.
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
maybe being able to move all your ships simultaneously in battle mode could help this game . nice game, nice concept but i agree with the others, really boring gameplay during seabattles
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
lol the AI hid behind a island and sunk my last ship but wont come out to destroy the fortress... and no way to get out of this ...
great BETA

i played pirates gold in cga dwag. it was always the basis of an excellent game. Make a 2nd one where you can be pirates as well bro and chuck all the fine tuning that could be done to make a good thing even better.
this be a good game

ya this defiantly feels like the beta version of a much greater game to come but honestly once i started playing i had to finish it that's just the way i am but in 5 mins into the game i had the whole game figured out and the easiest way to beat it so simple good bones for a much better and bigger game its been a long time since a good pirate game has come out at least 6 months

the armor-games logo is SO BAD PLACED!! i click it like 500 times per turn just cause i want to check/use/send with louisiana
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
This would be fun, but the balance of the ships is really out of whack-- most of the time the galleons are ridiculously powerful, and yet the critical hit of an enemy sloop can demolish your fortress or galleon in a single hit.
Makes the game very frustrating... not difficult, just frustrating.
It's like Age of Empires on a low budget...

I agree with jedimaster107 - this is a great start to a cool game. The biggest problem here I think is the AI. Why do ships come at me one by one when I'm attacking a port? Why do they choose random targets when the most sensible tactics would be to focus on one ship and try to off it in one turn? Why do the enemy ships NEVER storm my deck? Why does a country that's been reduced to a single port attack me with a single brigantine? (Or was that the peace negotiators? Oh well, nevermind...) Why isn't the Easy difficulty called "Ridiculous" and the Hard difficulty "Piece of cake"? What's the use of signing a peace treaty when any party can breach it during one and the same turn? Upvote if you agree - I'd really love the devs to explore the potential of this game.

Don't waste a single turn conquering lands, else, they'll entrench, and because you can't speed the thing up, you'll waste an hour more on a win.
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
really need the ability to either speed up the animation or remove it and have the ships instantly move tiles, it takes far too long to go through a game than it should.
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
I just have to say that for a game like this, it is of VITAL importance to understand the difference between a ship and a boat.
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
The freaking slow turns per ship is very annoying, so please make the battle scene a lot faster by adding speed up button. I give 2/5
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
There is a bug :/ If you are on the east edge of the map you can attack a unit on the west edge, one line under you. And if it's a fort, the battle never end...
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
It is really too short, I usually finish the game around ninth turn even on hard, which means I never got to fully explore the upgrade tree.
Also, the AI should definitely be more aggressive, their one-ship raid ain't treathening at all.
The digging mini-game is way too easy for my taste.
A speed up button is always nice.
More random events would be welcome.
(Maybe a nation-specific upgrade tree?)
Otherwise, great game, I really love it.
Keep them coming, Hoplite!

Each turn (or nearly) I loose a ship or two because of pirates, storms and reefs... The same in easy and normal mode I didn't even try hard mode.

I liked this game a lot and I played it several times. I think it has a lot of potential. The biggest problem is that there's not enough of it and it's too easily mastered. If it could be built up into something more complex it could be a first-rate game. My biggest complaint is with the pacing. The pauses and animations make it very slow, and by the time you get to the last half of the game it actually becomes quite time-consuming to just sail around destroying the forts and merchants.
The idea of being able to destroy merchants is a good one, but poorly implemented. Since merchants don't fight, I can just ignore them and then it becomes a chore to finish them off after the battle is won. Maybe we could find a better way to intercept shipping traffic.

I made a sloop the first turn. It killed every fort. I just moved it in range shot moved it back. Then after alot of turns or a critical i laughed.
