This game was a ton of fun. Took several tries to beat level 7. Had a good mix of Splash, Cantrip, and Shield, focusing on doubling up on upgrades. You can have more than 3 hearts at a time!

Very nice game. I wonder how it will be with bigger boards to add more levels. And please make victory item pickable, I feel like kinda cursed this way.

please let us do something except taking damage when you have three pawns in hand and have an enemy infront of you thats literally how my best runs ended

Ggon: you can never be pinned down on your first move, not getting pinned down later even with a bad draw that is mainly skill, though sometimes very bad luck cant make you avoid it. The best way to avoid it is to make sure at least one enemy can only reach a diagonal forward from you. It will almost always go there then just to be adjacent to you. (unless its a ranged enemy of course don't count on them to try and get close. and dont be afraid to skip the rest of your moves if it leaes you in a safer position. btw if there are at least 3 pieces left for you to draw and 2 or less are pawns then you can ignore those guidelines, same if you end on the top row.

nice^^ it is quite challenging, but in a good way - only complaint: i died three times being pinned down by one enemy and stuck with nothing but 3 pawns and not able to execute my turn at all

if you can get both splash types on a knight it will just clear out the last floors honestly, but splash on pawns + cantrips are also incredibly useful. Honestly I never upgraded anything but knights and pawns

Such a cool concept and amazing execution! I can't wait to see what you do with this, I would love to see it expanded with more deck customization and evolve into a dungeon game or something.

I don't know if anyone realized but when you go to get the prize after floor 7 there is still some stairs down which repeats the 7th floor with the victory and prize still on screen

Not sure if it was your intention but splash doesn't seem to work when a nimble enemy moves back even if their where the splash should hit. Also to prevent unavoidable deaths it's valuable to let the player move first instead of the enemies, or make the maps bigger (this I assume would happen either way in the full game). Looking forward to seeing this one on steam or kartridge :D

very nice game! i thought there would be more levels :/
i hope you keep developing this game! maybe more than one controlable pawn, wider board, more enemies...
anyway, congrats for this game! i super enjoyed it!

Man, nimble is such a pain to deal with. It'd feel a bit more controllable if enemies couldn't attack for a turn after dodging. Similarly, endgame blight feels impossible to deal with without shields, so some way to clear or prevent it would be nice.
But those are minor gripes, and I'm curious what comes next for this fun little puzzle! Different decks? Longer-term upgrades? Fully animated 3d cutscenes? There's lots of potential here

I think the game is super well balanced, it took me about an hour to beat, and I felt very proud of myself when I finished it, and think it has good replay value. I also suspect that once you get good, most runs are winnable, so basically the perfect storm.
But, its not too hard to add a handicap option, if people are getting frustrated. Some ideas are:
-Giving king cantrip/shield at the start of the game is a very clear change, and flavorful, using doom style difficulty settings; 'go in prepared' or something could be the easy text, 'walk in' for normal.
The following ideas all result in about 1 more upgrade at the end of the game, but thats might be too little too late.
-making all upgrades cost one less
-gems give you one more coin
-adding one to two more 'money slot' to the turn counter
Again, I really don't think you need to do any of these, and I think the game is super well balanced as is. but, if you want to add difficulty, these are some ideas

The number of runs I had that got me towards the end, I had splash damage kill a blighter, and then I got killed by the blight, is like 4. Made the final victory all the better.

Very nice games. I went with a very well rounded upgrade strategy, and its seems very balanced. Energy upgrades are basically a buy on sight, if possible; its worth saving your money if none exist, but all of the upgrades have their place. Great game!

Incredible. A really nice new concept. Love the strategy and the bit of luck. Please, please, please keep developing this. Would definitely buy a full version of this.

game just froze with a normal mouse and if you think about it, there's no way for the game to know what device is being used so no reason to think that's the cause
Sorry about that. I'm trying to pinpoint the exact issue. While the game doesn't technically recognize a touchpad from a mouse, my observation so far has been that sometimes using the former makes some mouse events not register, or register out of order. Clearly that's not 100% the case though. What browser are you using?

This is what I have said, the pawn doesn't turn into a Queen, and just lookng into the problem before you just said it is difference with the chest.
THIS IS THE REAL PROBLEM. THE BUG. THE CODE IS JUST HAVING A PROBLEM WHICH NEED TO BE MODIFIED.

Really nice game! I like the concept very much. There is one thing that I think is more frustrating than just dying and having to restart: Dyinig because you only have pawns and can't move at all! Other than that, it' a lot of fun
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
this is awesome! I'd be very excited to see where you take the concept. I think that having more levels with a less steep difficulty curve to allow people to build slightly stronger decks for the hardest levels would give the game more longevity.

I must say the more I play the more I like this game and the more of it I want. The bug in the last level that allows you to replay it if you go in the hidden staircase spot is also a huge addon: I can see how many times I can finish the last level with my deck
Yeah, the replayable final round was a bug I discovered early on, but I decided to leave it in as an easter egg in all its buggy glory, for players who want a challenge ;)

It took me a while to figure out the controls and the gameplay, but once I did I really liked it. I strongly suggest adding detailed instructions in a how-to-play option in the beginning.
Under rating threshold (hideshow)
I don't know if it's a bug or is intended, but if you win the game, and go to where the stairs are usually located you will enter the final level again, with your current health. I managed to win a second time, starting with just one health, really challenging
Hey, all elements are mechanics of the game are quite exhaustively explained in-game, right from the starting screen. The instructions would just be copy-pasted, and not very useful without the context.

Definitely enjoying the game, but (due to blight) have wanted to not move the full length of a queen/bishop/castles movement. Castles and Bishops, perhaps their moves can be set like that, but i feel like if the queen is meant to be able to get you back in the game, that it shouldnt force you to go to a square you will die or get injured, and that you should be able to select which square you want to go to.
Or bring in a special upgrade or a new card/piece?
Love the chess vibe but doesnt have to stick to it solidly. could "add" a piece to chess you have always wanted? Like an engineer or something that leaves a booby trap on your tile after you leave it, but you could also hurt yourself with it.
Anyway, point is, I enjoyed the game but didnt like the mandatory hurting myself option when my queen card made me pass through safe places to end up on an unsafe square.

I like the premise, but sadly challenge is all depending on if you get energy upgrades or not. One time beating it without energy upgrade focus. Second I think you should have a bit of a tutorial and more levels. Simply because blight isn't fully understood, (IE is it from enemies or my moves, the tool tip is vague). Second explaining the hits with the arrows. I'm a reasonably smart person so i can figure things out.... but took some trial and error, but I love chess so I stuck it out.

Lovely concept and implementation! Little issue with random drawing: I had two runs, and in both, I got stuck with a hand full of pawns, and all of them had only invalid moves. Not having any option other than skipping turn until I die is not ideal xD
