So... the footprints just led me off the grid, and I never found him. (Top of the column, pointed up. No adjacent footprints found via upgrade. Left and right were clear, the rest of the column was clear.) When I say 'clear' I mean I clicked on them.

DID IT! Hard but nice. I think it is good, that there is no grinding component, it would make the whole thing too easy.
TIP: Save your click and you will get a lot of HP, than buy the right gut (and just him), upgrade yourself completely and his health and armor. For silver I would buy: Footprintdetection, extra dmg to damyo, multislash and move speed.

It's an OK game, but not up to Nerdook standards. The upgrade system needs improvement. I'm not asking for upgrades to be kept even through defeat, just that it should be made more clear that grinding doesn't function in this game. Though perhaps it might help on harder settings if you can choose a few permanent upgrades to transfer over, or at least upgraded stats on companions?

I know my monitor is very old and really needs updating, but can't see enough of the game to make any sense to try to play it. Using Firefox.

Simply a bloody awesome game, well done!! Simple idea but with a lot of strategy. I love the fact there is a lot of strategy deciding your upgrades and not just simply beefing everything up.

The idea for a game is very nice. But... Why the hell I have to start all over again when my irreversible upgrade choices prevent me from completing the game?

to find the daimyo you have to click on his square. Even if you click in the square next to him you wont be able to see the diaymo in adjacent squares.

haha, found an awesome bug. The monastary picture is so big, if you scouted the square above it, you can see the tip of the monastary sticking into that square :-D

hmm i enjoyd the game even if it was just 5minutes.... due to defeating 1 area and then due to lack of upgradables (Only had 1exp after i buyd monk) so couldnot upgrade therfor making me loose EVERY thing i attacked..... not good but i enjoyd the short time i had on it

See alot of comments in regards to losing upgrades... in my opinion, it is just the same as restarting at the last check/save point. It allows you to rethink your strategy (redo upgrades or buy consumables)
Just finished the game on Hardcore mode with all 5 stars. And here's the strat:
- Choose a province where the Mook boosters won't affect you till later in the game. My preferred order are Ninja boosts, Elite boosts > Daimyo boosts > Archer boosts > Swordsman boosts > Click decrease > Mook increase. Keep in mind that these are random for each game. I always found the first stage the hardest.

317500 score (5* on nightmare). Protips (for Nightmare): Upgrade damage on Sam a bit so you can one-shot things, grab the Monk then Brute then maybe Archer. Your EXP should prioritize damage on Sam (since it makes him one-shot, and thus get hit less) and then getting 2pts in everything else. For market upgrades, I'd recommend miner, multi strike, expert tracker, focus: shadow clone, regeneration, mercenary armor, and maybe souldrinker and quickstrike if you have cash to spare. Fantastic game, really makes you think about how things work and how to progress.

I don't know if I'm reading too far into it, but this game presents an interesting exploration of revenge and death; it's almost confronting to have to kill hundreds of footsoldiers and see your companions die before your eyes, just because you were selfish with your choice of upgrades. And in the end, there's no real consolation, just the samurai standing alone on a pile of bodies. tl;dr Great game!

If you die on a level, it's probably not because you didn't upgrade right; if you find the daimyo early and spend most of your clicks clearing out mooks and healing appropriately at rice fields, you can start each battle with less than 10 mooks to fight before the daimyo. Even if you did upgrade poorly, there are only 7 levels... just start over and try different upgrades. It isn't as though it will take very long to get back to where you were.
The fact that you can't grind this out makes this game more about strategy than sheer time put into it, which is why I enjoyed it. What the hell does everybody like so much about grinding? I'd much rather have a game that requires some skill & strategy to beat than one that just requires me to play it for enough time.

I like reading that whining about how hard this game is.
In my opinion, it is good enough.
And the unability to re-play provinces and gain upgrades from lost rounds makes players to thing other that stupidly gain lots of xp and pass the game.
4.5/5 (ok, 5/5 since there are no fractions here)
Hope you'll make more awesome games, nerdook!

May we please have a high scores leaderboard on Kongregate for this game? I liked the game and want to see how my score compares to others'.

Got to the last fight, 80 mooks left, full health, still lost because i must have taken teh wrong upgrades, so i have to start all over again...1/5

At last! First game from Nerdook which I didn't like that much ;). About that darn upgrades... You should made it permanent and allow to train at already beaten provinces in normal mode, and made it like they "are now" in hardcore. Normal mode is just too hard... Otherwise quite good game, I really like those mixes of "minesweeper+". Keep up good work!

I really like this game. It requires straight up strategy to win. I actually needed to use my noggin to beat this game. Although, buying bowman was a mistake....

Just defeated the nightmare mode with 5 stars(first try, maybe too easy)
My first buy with silver was +3silver on mountains, I dont know if its any good because you need to visit 17 mountains to profit on it. Then the multi strike, Focus:chackra, focus:slash(hurts!), and last regen and souldrinker. If i had more silver i would've bought elite slayer. Also, max the samurais health, if he dies you're out. Have 2 points in the attackspeed, health etc. on everyone(exept monk, he dies anyway, just buy him for star)... because you can afford it. First companion was brute because he never dies. +1 if helpful please:)

The games story really sucked me in, and i am now more interested in Japan than ever before. also, the combat system is really, really new and interesting. i love the music, and the artstyle and rose/sakura petals are just beautifull. the only thing that's missing is a slightly better tutorial.

The shogun province gave me alot of challenges.. here's how i beat it: 1.utilize your archer as your main damage output. he shoots fast and crits without losing hp (if spawned on the sides of map) HE IS AWESOME ! 2. I only use brute and samuri as tanks (after i fully upped samuri's hp, i add some of his damage and took the cluster attack and elite attack). If this helps, please + so it passes on for others !

Hmmm... The Elite Slayer is supposed to be a permanent upgrade but after I bought it twice, it still shows up as being available to purchase. That's possibly 200 silver gone up in smoke. No way of knowing whether I actually have it or not.

The "medium" badge is more like a hard badge. I hate games that leave 0% margin for error =_=
frustrating.... especially when you get punished each time you fail (-5% score) 2/5

if running low on health make sure you have one click left and atleast 10 silver. if you buy a health refill then click a covered ricefeild square your health will return to your max health.
