For those stuck on the "helping hand" part, simply remember that the only other people you've met are those nice villagers. They're apparently stupid and cannot find food for themselves, so wait until a warmer season and find wheat. Plant the wheat near the village and wait. You'll notice the houses beginning to turn from dirt shacks to nice homes with roofs. You'll also notice bridges being built. Wait until one is built near the part you need to get across.

How do we get a helping hand? I'm so lost. I planted grain in the village, but nobody came to help. Someone please help

To get the Helping Hand you just need to get to the other side of the river, then wait for autumn and collect the wheat. Next you need to go back underwater until you reach the village. There you plant the wheat and go to the place where you need the helping hand. You can now just wait there now until the villagers create a bridge.

Technically, we just raised the pressure in the magma chamber underneath the volcano... which should lead to a bigger eruption, causing more damage.
