i think it's perfect for what it is intended, learning the kanas for people that don't know them. It's very useful, and it works great.
This surely can be improved into an awesome game, with more learning and more fun, but i think it's perfect the way it is for what it was intended

I came here for the Anti Idle: The game codes, then I stayed. It was more fun than I expected. I may never be able to write all of this, but I'll be able to recognize this somewhere on a sign maybe! Great fun way to learn Katakana or Hirigana! 5/5

The game is cool and it's helping me relearn each character, only problem is that my computer lags and it never registers my first keypress on each character. Any way to make the terrain and the background fixed and animations off so I can at least have a chance at getting the perfects when I know the exact characters?

Another very well-made game from Tukkun, and I love the topic you picked. I do have one quick suggestion: Could the character list symbols change color based on Mastery? I'm thinking perhaps green for 50%+ and yellow/gold for 100%. Lets you tell at a glance what needs work and what's already perfect. Thanks muchly.

It's a good idea and definitely has potential, but for me, this leans too much towards the "learning" side of things and doesn't have enough of the "gaming" which would make for a much better learning experience.

The pace of the game is too slow. I'm not an expert in hiragana but I think there should be a way to clear the early stages faster for those that are already somewhat familiar. I got to level 6 after 5 mins and it wasn't really exciting. I would suggest a speed-up button or a "rush" mode where all the enemies/blocks just come at you at once. If these exist later on, that's great, but people probably would give up before they get that far.

Hummm, I wonder. Can you add a part for learning how to write it? I don't know exactly how it would work, but it would be cool! After all, recognizing is quite different from writing. I know this myself, as my handwriting is pretty bad.
That feature technically exists - go grab some paper or a notebook and a pen, and practice writing however much you want! You can refer to the stroke orders shown in the Character List screen of the game. It isn't possible to implement that feature to this game, as there are many different styles of writing and that makes it impossible for the game to determine whether you drew the kana correctly. Besides, who writes using a mouse anyway?

Nice game. Loved the concept of shooting only the puppets with kana you know. Also nice to be able to select hiragana/katakana or both. Maybe even better when you add item such as 'Shield' so you dont fail immediately after losing one kana (bounce it back instead, so you can retry that kana). Or maybe add bullit time/ slowmotion option.
Other option you can add is coloured dakuten. I think it might reduce difficulty to recognize kana for beginners.
Also, I'm really lazy, so I dont like to hit enter/space every time after typing a kana. For game play it might be nice to an option to automatic check after every entered letter if it is correct. E.g. the 'kyo' kana check first letter k=correct, y=correct, u=fail.
I enjoyed the game. Keep up the good work.

Hey all! I have listened to your feedback and have made a few changes! Notably, you can now unlock all Adventure Mode stages if you score 5,000,000 points in Free Play, some unnecessary intrusive instruction text in stage 1 is removed to make the user interface "cleaner", and the lengths of stage 3 and 4 are reduced to make this game a little less tedious for badge hunters (but guaranteed not to affect your overall experience)! Thank you everyone for contributing to the success of Kana Warrior!

This is a pretty interesting game. Not bad. Pretty simple... お疲れ様. Would've been nice if this little school project became more flashy and all, if you know what I mean. Just saying, haha.
Hmm... I'll probably consider something like that, but for now, you can skip straight to stage 26 by scoring 1,500,000 points in Free Play Mode, which is pretty close to what you are wishing for. Thank you for your feedback!
Hi! The game should auto save to your computer, so if it doesn't save for you, there is something wrong with your computer's configuration. Make sure that browser cookies are enabled, your Local Storage (right click -> Settings) is set at "Unlimited", and you don't use junk cleaning programs such as CCleaner. I hope it works for you, and please do tell me if it still doesn't work!
Well, the game does have some short explanation for it, but in general, hiragana is used to write native Japanese words (alongside with kanji), for example "kotoba" (meaning: word, hiragana: ことば, or kanji: 言葉), while katakana is used to write loan words, for example "kamera" (meaning: camera, katakana: カメラ). So for instance, if you are to transcribe your name into Japanese, it would be written in katakana. But if you are to read some Japanese text, you will likely see more hiragana than katakana, so it is usually advised to learn hiragana first.

this game seems more suited for people who already know some japanese, not for people who want to learn it. By the time you get to level 10 you already forgot the characters on level 3, etc. Also the game never explains the characters themselves or how to associate them. To me it's just "Oh, so this squiggly thing with the line right is that, the bigger sign is that, the total mess sign that, etc.' With no association in the game there is no way these characters will stick. Decent game for people refreshing what they already know, bad for people new to Japanese.
Thank you for your constructive feedback. There are in fact review levels where characters in previous stages appear, but it's hard to ensure that the player will memorize everything perfectly after playing a game, and it's definitely difficult to memorize all of them (try doing that without this game, it's just as difficult if not more difficult!). And you're probably right that there needs to be more explanation (not sure what kind of explanation though, characters are just characters, like letters in the English alphabet!). However, I'll definitely keep this in consideration!

I've learnt some Japanese, forgot some Japanese, never will use Japanese, got a badge, forgotten all Japanese, and feel somewhat successful all in all :)
It's true but the game would be too long otherwise. I made it this way so that you can sort of learn at your own pace. Rather than making levels of length 100, I make them have a length of 20~25 and give users a score rating to let them know whether they still need improvement. If you have good memory or have prior knowledge of hiragana and katakana, it's possible to finish this game in about an hour and a half, but you're free to replay levels as much as you need. Some people might replay once, others may want to replay five times. Shorter levels give the players control of that.

Very nice game, but maybe it would be better to change the order of levels according to concord with usual japaneses lessons.
Most japaneses learning methods mix katakana and hiragana learning. Here the hiragana and katakana seems totally separed (I'm only at lvl 21, can't say precisely).
Wait, what? No, most Japanese lessons I know of advise you to learn and master hiragana BEFORE katakana, because hiragana is much more frequently used and learning both at the same time has a danger of making you write both hiragana and katakana in one word. I could be wrong but learning them at the same time sounds awkward to me.

This is the moment when the years spent here in a Northern Italian university learning Japanese and the Oriental Cultures finally turns useful! <3
This is a very stupid question but are you using Internet Explorer? It has a tendency to cause stuck keys issue in many games. If not... well, I suppose it could be ordinary lag, which can be reduced or eliminated by changing graphic quality of the game to low, disabling background, zooming out browser and closing unnecessary programs. If that doesn't help at all... tough luck, I guess. In any case, thank you for checking out Kana Warrior and enjoy your badge!

Good game! It's really helping me with my speed of recognition. It would be helpful though if you accepted all the standard romaji->hiragana inputs, like "si" for "shi," "tu" for "tsu," etc. (I know it goes against the pronunciation.)

Oh man... Thank you so much! I briefly learned Japanese back at the start of highschool but we only did it for one year. Really was a shame because I had a lot of fun with it. Only recently started to learn it again by teaching myself and this came up at the perfect time! Thank you so much!
With only one easy badge the game's rating has already dropped by 0.1 in half a day and people are complaining about why this game got badged instead of some super awesome microtransaction MMO. I don't even want to imagine what will happen if this game gets an impossible badge...

I have a terrible memory so I simply print screened and pasted into paint, cut the info I needed and made it so both windows were viewable. it's a nice idea it's just not something I'd ever be able to do on my own. gave it a high score though.

Amazing game! If anybody is interested in also learning Kanji you can check out the work at https://lrnj.com/, another pretty basic game, but is much more fun than just memorizing a book or page of characters and it introduces them much like this one (a few at a time in like-groupings).

I really like it. I might finally be able to keep these straight in my head with a game to help for repetition with randomness. Just going over them by yourself becomes both dull and ineffective.
Well, thank you! Enjoy your badge and 5 points, and if you decide to learn Japanese in the future, remember that this game is always there to help you!

I originally came to this because it had badge but, when I realized what is about, I was shocked. This is such a good idea. I agree the graphics are, but the idea is swell. I clepe it 5/5 easily for concept; as for the implementation and the graphics, I am certain the graphics will be improved while the implementation is enough for now. May you continue on in the production of games of this quality in terms of ideas.

At first I was just going to play for the badge then since I was thinking of learn Japanese I continued. Thank you so much for making this 5/5

Thank you for making this, I have recently started trying to teach myself japanese so finding this on kong was a godsend. 5/5
Yeah, I'm learning Japanese as well and after quite some time of learning it, I still believe that learning the kana was one of the hardest (but most important) things. Once you have mastered hiragana and katakana, you will be able to move on to pretty much anything else - kanji, vocabulary, you-name-it! Good luck on your Japanese learning and thank you for playing this!
