I beat the game with just magic units, although I'd have 1 powerful melee unit that isn't phyical for the treasure hunt quest for the covenant

Gotta say after beating the first two this wasn't 'EASIER' just more approachable, you've outdone yourself with the units, but it would be nice to have an area to show all the units you've used, or maybe all units in game so you can compare them.

I've enjoyed all of the protector games. I like the addition of some RPG elements, but melee units are pretty much useless. I still like the game a lot though.

@ Emmivisser, the advanced units have a much better growth rate than basic, and if you noticed, archwizard has higher speed and range, those are just as important as attack

What I don't get is why most advanced units are a lot weaker than the basic units. For instance, and energy hero has:
Basic - Trainee (14 - 6 - 2)
Advanced - Technomancer (6 - 5 - 3)
What's the point in paying 4x as much for a units that's much weaker?

As Twanfr said, the enemies have very few abilities. Things like magic/ranged immunity or resistance would make melee units actually useful. Also, some form of item management would be nice. Still a great game though.

Good game. 9,5 h of fun to complete the story, so it is much shorter and less challenging than the previous installments.

I don't think elemental switching is the thing making this protector too easy, I never use switches, and win easily most missions anyway (you just need to gather one hero of each element, and make sure they use only ranged or magic units). Enemies should have more abilities to make the game harder. I suggest a return of infection and slow immune creatures, and new immunities, to magic and ranged so melee units become a need for some missions.

I found many of the new features confusing and unnecasary (sic) stick to the original formula, why mess with a good thing? 3/5

Finally I was just about to abandon this "too easy" game when I reached a first difficult storyline mission (the forgoten cavern) so it seems it's just a matter of advancing the storyline instead of doing "normal" quests.

The "ultimate protector" is still Protector Reclaiming the Throne for me.
This one, like the previous one, is good for the added RPG elements but they make the gamer so easy there is no challenge (or are there some difficult missions at some point ? for the moment after 25 quests or so I haven't found one, most results are perfect in one try).

When having acquired a new hero, and using a memory wiper on them in order to rearrange the skill points to my liking, it wipes them and does not convert any of those points into experience points, as the scroll indicates.

This game is really awesome, but then everything always has something lacking. for this game, i would say the sub-menus for the units shouldnt need to be manually closed when your fighting. I find it really annoying sometimes >.>

The only melee unit I found useful is the cutpurse/gentleman because they steal gold(I wish the gold went straight into your treasury instead of the battle funds where you lose most of it at the end though). Also maybe you can increase the difficulty by having heros 'die' if you lose a map and you have to recruit them again. Great game!

guide:
1. use only one hero with two ranged units. best is to use basic energy wizard hero.
Boost her "Elemental" skill - so you can pierce through the Elemental strength of the enemy. train "magic use" for more overall damage. (25 in "Elemental" are enough). your units deal more damage than any other hero's, even if you hit the elemental strength.
2. Use Items that switch your elements, when you meet a wave that absorbs energy. Just pick one which has no absorb. (they are in stores later)
3. with your personal character (=you, not a hero!) train "Energy skill". all else does not pay off. (eg. 10 looting = still crappy items)
4. for the storyline q. "the forgotten cavern", you need physical. if you don't have it, you must use "advisor cordon"s crobssbowmen..
5. use money for: a) buy scrolls which give talents. b) Buy strongest artifacts c) do not use the expedition, unless you want to waste overflowing money! :)
6. do normal quests for the council of magi.

ranged and magical units don't seem to be much different in gameplay. also melee would be just a defect, as the fact that defines it is just the incapability of attacking air, though melee units seem to be more powerful, i'm still not so shure,. it would be nice to have a description of the differences between unit types, if there are any differences at all. and/or enemy waves should have some sort of weakness to melee/ranged/magical. anyway i've been playing this for weeks, great game. i love these rpg/td fusions

Best way to play is check monster strenghts before play a map and choose one element which doesn't appear as strenght so you will give at least 100% damage to all monsters:P
I didn't liked any other game from protector series but this one with quests, heroes, items and upgrade points is really awesome
