I didn't even realize there was something besides lasers to choose.
At level 12, I stopped firing the main gun.
By level 15 I had all upgrades for 6 lasers and the main gun.
between 12 and 25 Only 2 saucers slipped though, and then it was super clock fest for the boss.
I don't think this game is well balanced.

Around level 20 some saucers managed to slip past the wall of lasers. Then there was the boss.
