Some tips ;-)
Sometimes, if you need better control of the ball, run towards the ball, release [space] right before reaching it, turn to the direction you want to kick and press space again.

This game was a challenge which is best overcome by kicking the ball wildly. The best way to win - kick the ball off the start of a new play towards their net, run around the defender, continue 2 more times, goal. Otherwise you will likely get scored on.
