The combat system is nice. You should use it as a base for a better game. Add good backgrounds, different characters and make the jump attacks better.

It would be nice if the power-up orbs stayed on the ground for more than one second before disappearing. Too often I had to knock out another enemy to get to it, but by then the orb was gone. Of course, for what little damage the special attack did to the boss, I'm thinking it doesn't really matter.
Also, the invulnerability window after getting hit is too small; at one point I tried to make my way around a pair of enemies to avoid being surrounded, and wound up being severely wounded because the invincibility didn't last longer than the time it took the enemies to get into position to attack again.

I like the look and love the music, but the play control is really bad. The jump key needs to be next to the movement keys or the attack key, especially if you have to combine them for moves. You also shouldn't have enemies attack from two sides if the character turns so slowly. Other than that, it was pretty cool.
