Hey all! Over the past few months I’ve been working on building an Android app that makes the forums experience on a mobile device a thousand times less painful. After some long nights banging away at bugs, I present to you, the general public, the app.
This is the first release of this app, and, as such, there may be some bugs. Let me know if you encounter one!
Disclaimer
This app is not endorsed by Kongregate in any way. They are not responsible for supporting the app, nor are they guaranteeing they won’t break it with a future update. I’m going to do my best to keep it running, though!
Passwords
The app asks for your password in order to perform authentication. It does not store your password locally, or in the cloud. It is only transmitted, encrypted, to Kongregate’s severs to establish a session.
The App!
What you can do with it
- Browse all of the forums on Kongregate, including special ones (e.g. the mod forums) to which your account may have access
- Jump to the most recent post in a thread
- View images
- Follow links
- Post new threads
- Post replies to threads
- Quote posts
- Edit Posts
- Delete posts
- Browse ALL forums
- Jump between pages of threads and posts
In the works:
Requirements:
- An Android device running 2.1 (Eclair) or above.
What’s new
Features
- Ice Cream Sandwich compatibility with full GPU acceleration
- More native widgets and controls
- Changed the layout of the post editor to reduce the number of accidental ‘Post’ and ‘Cancel’ taps
- Eliminated the slight lag between transitions when selecting a subforum or topic
- Images are now resized whenever the device is rotated
- Under the hood changes in preparation for tablet support and theming
- Theme improvements
- Performance improvements
Bug Fixes
- Fixed the bug that required the Quote/Edit/Delete action workaround
- Fixed a bug where the app would throw an error when returning from the background
Known issues
- Sometimes you are not placed on the most recent post despite having the option selected
- Image resizing can be slightly wonky
I’m working on fixing these.
Download
Download it from the Google Play Store (or search for “Kongregate Mobile Forums”).

Feedback
If you like the app, rate (or +1) it! If you think it’s the worst thing since Indiana Jones 4, let me know what I can do to change your mind. If it crashes, please send the crash report! Those things are invaluable to a developer as they contain a stack trace, which makes figuring out what’s going on a lot easier.
Please use the support email listed in the market to report bugs, request features, or to provide general feedback. It’s hard supporting people individually on this thread.
FAQs
- Can you make a version for iOS?
No. I’d need to own a Mac for that, and I’d also need to pay a fee just for a development key.
- Can you make a version for BlackBerry?
No. Developing for BlackBerry is hell.
- What about Windows Phone 7 or WebOS?
I made the Android version because I own an Android device. If there is enough demand, however, I’d consider porting it to either of these platforms.
- Can you make it work with chat?
No. That’s a whole different ball of wax.
- This is the best thing since sliced bread! Will you father my children?
Maybe.
Notes
Thanks go out to:
- MossyStump for making the navigation button graphics
- All of the mods who beta tested the app
- Jim, Emily, KongBabies 1 & 2, and the Kongregate staff for keeping the site awesome.

Can you show some screenshots since I don’t have an android? I pretty much have an iPod Touch 4G, and an iPhone 3GS
EDIT: Nevermind. I looked and saw it. Pretty awesome. Keep up the good work.

Hi Trent. None of the mods that beta tested had an issue. However, a friend of mine with a Captivate reported the same thing. What’s your OS version and device model? I might have a workaround that I can push out in an update.

Wow! Much needed and well made app, thank you :) I also have an issue with quoting, on HTC Desire running 2.2 – but other than that, it’s wonderful! Thanks c:

Hey all, just pushed an update out to the market that should fix the quote/edit/delete action bugs that some have been encountering. To enable the fix:
When you first sign in to the app, hit menu > preferences and check the box for “Fix Edit, Quote & Delete”. Then view a thread and try the actions out.
You should only apply the fix if those actions aren’t working for you.

It takes up 13 bytes.
That’s far too much.
Good work though.

:D How did you make an app in 13 bytes? Android must have some library built in.

He was joking about the name I develop apps under: 13bytes.
Android must have some library built in.
Yup. I was all like
import android.util.KongForums;
public class MyApp extends KongForumsApp {
@Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
}
}
:D

Must be one heck of a compiler too!
Actually though, when I glanced at your app’s page, I just defaulted to kilobytes and actually thought it was the (incredibly small) file size. <:-|
