I know mods have a presence in chatrooms and such. but 90% of the time they are not there when all the annoying spammers decides to pop in. And when I look for other mods in Modfriends, nobody comes. When muting is the only option it works for a little bit until he/she makes another account to spam the same stuff.

I agree, completely. There’s not enough moderators around often enough.
But, an argument that will be used (which isn’t entirely wrong) is that you should just keep muting them and they’ll get tired of it eventually.

The funny thing is the same person made 4 accounts just to annoy the same two game chatrooms. After he/she figured it out, he/she made another one.

It’s better that we have no moderators than shit moderators.
Give it time, it’s a process that takes a while, and it’s better that we wait and get the right people as moderators than rushing it and ending up with the wrong people.

Honestly, if a person is going to create multiple accounts to harass a chatroom, there’s not much that even a mod can do—if they silence/ban an account, they’ll just create another one.
The best option is to simply report the accounts—although the reporting process is not immediate, it alerts the administration to the problem, at which point further action can be taken.
I remember a horrible week in April 2009 when my chatroom was invaded by a group of people that created a total of over 50 accounts between them—there was nothing we could do but wait it out.

By no means am I trying to justify those who blatantly ignore modcalls, because I know I’ve ignored one or two in my days for various reasons. One thing though you have to keep in mind, is that Mods are users just like everyone else. We’re not obligated to pay attention to chat, sometimes I’ve left my games running for hours on end and come back to a whole slew of PM’s of people asking for help. We’re just…. The same, we do the same things, and we make the same mistakes. Nobody is perfect, and neither are we.

I don’t think it’s so much that you guys don’t answer, or aren’t around. We – I – get that. It’s just when there’s no one around at all and this person is being untolerable. Yes, as race said, report (which I forgot to mention in my first post) but what about now? They’re causing problems right now and there’s no way to address the issue in real time – that’s the proper. There’s no real time resolution.

So it’s not that we’re not around, it’s just when we’re not around and it’s inconvenient for you?

Individually, it’s not a problem. Collectively when no one is around, it’s a problem, yes.

I have mixed views on this. Moderators who do not talk in chat may not necessarily be idle. It’s a good trap for spammers.
In addition there is a huge variety in the quality of moderation. Some of them are diplomatic, fair and tolerant while others seem to stir and aggravate users while encouraging mini modding.

I once had a person who made like 20 accounts all targeting me… One was even named Wiggles69, and they nearly got ME silenced. It sucked. They stopped after a few weeks, but it was ridiculous!

I think spammers feel threaten when a mod is around, because they know that they will get banned if they cross the line lol

Sure they did, because Mods ban retroactively through your profile all the time.
Protip: They never do.

It may be more like they got confused over the names, Wiggles69 could have been spamming or whatever and wiggles 96 might of posted in that time as well and the mod could have clicked the wrong name. I’ve some close to doing it a few times as well.

I believe him, since the same thing almost happened to me. Some guy with a name similar to my name came into chat and was spamming all over the place, all the people who weren’t regulars thought it was me and demanded to the mods that I be silenced, and at the time there was a non-regular mod in there. Thankfully the regulars noticed the minor difference in the names and pointed it out to the mod.

In the chatroom I usually are in, a Dutch one, were usually around four mods online. Yes, online. When there were four mods online, and only one was active I wondered what the hell they all did in the chatroom. Trolls often come to our room, troll whatever they like (even when there’s four mods) and leave.
I discussed this with the mods and they just told me “we have a life too!”. While this is true, I told them that their status as mod was to act appropriately when trolls were around, and they never did.
It just turned out that it didn’t matter if they were there or not since trolls could just do whatever they’d like.

Mods are not being payed to filter chat. It is entirely their own commitment that they are to do their duties, and if they did they would spend 12 hours a day sitting at the computer going around and policing any wrong-doers. This would mean that the mod has no free time to themselves, has no way to make money, and is completely ignoring their social life.
Obviously this means that we can’t expect a perfect mod to do the right thing 100% of the time. However I think we need to raise the standard for mod behavior.
My chat room is DE. If the several mods were not enough it is also favored by IAmTheCandyman, an Admin. Most of the time it is actually a very nice chatroom, and mental age is through the roof with everyone who joins. Often I strike up an interesting conversation with mods themselves, and if anything I know that they are more than a username but a person. However there is one problem…we have a neighborhood troll. Daf, to be exact. He has about 30 different usernames, from Tis_Daf__ to Tis_Daf_ to Chancellor Daf to Emperor Daf. And right now, everyone has given up. There is NO way to deal with this simple solution, for as soon as you mute Tis_Daf, BAM here comes King Daf. It’s impossible to get this guy, and both the mods and the users have given up. The users just refuse to mute him since it’s a waste of time, plus they get to play with his little demented mind. The mods are tangled for they need clear evidence that it is indeed Daf again and not someone who is just of the same name, and Mr. Daf is the king of evading the mod police. On the final warning Tis_Daf__ calms down, but then logs out and here comes Tis_Daf_ with a new set of strikes to blow through. I am currently trying to find where on Kongregate you can see all the people you have muted so I can see just all the Daf alts there are.
Now, take the moderators sick of trying to get this impossible troll and the users who have given up on the mute and ignore feature. They flock over to different chatrooms and spread there hopelessness on catching trolls, because for all they know you can’t catch trolls. We need to fight this, I don’t know how but we need to fight this.
Now factoring all the stress that is going around, can we please just excuse some pushy users and fed-up mods?
EDIT: Thanks below. Wow, I have muted a LOT of people…

Go to your profile and add /blocked to the end of the URL and it’ll show you everyone you’ve muted.

I can’t comment on your situation as I don’t know it.
What I find is that in my regular room, when someone starts spamming, no one even comments on it, we just continue chatting as if nothing is happening.
In other chats, as soon as someone comments on the spammer they seem to spam more. Maybe this is unique to me, but I find, that if everyone ignores them, there really isn’t any problem, as all they are trying to do is provoke some kind of reaction.

In the past few months mods actually have gotten double their normal salary.
They should be working harder!
By the way, in my experience it’s good to be appreciative of things like the mute feature, and mods in general. :O

It doesn’t help that double 0 is still 0.
