Probably because at this point, it’s become, for the most part, a stagnant and dwindling community with few original game picks. The golden age is long gone, and no matter how much we try to make up for that by loading tournies with new and intriguing elements, participation keeps going down. Tournaments from 2009-2011 averaged 100 participants each; the tournaments 2013 to the first third of 2014 have averaged less than half that, right down to [our last tournament,](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/16fGl0PAybV8O_KYvSZ2YHNrIZXJvXXLT6AjE_w3qvcY/edit#gid=0) in which a whopping 18 people joined.
The sign-ups & directory thread has fallen into disrepair despite several people having access to the account to update it, and the last edit made to the [info & results sheet](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ak0_0Mkyb20SdDlBaWE4M0tXT0d0aDhrb2hkcDBqR3c) was on August 2, 2014. There’s simply not enough interest. That being said, I’d join any new one that was made, but I doubt I’d be very committed.

don’t worry i always hated them anyway
there’s always super over competitive arrogant guys who always have to win and when someone STUPID beats them they repot them for hacking
or they just cry themselves to sleep lol
and then there’s ppl like me who have to make up sad excuses for being so bad ;(
neer ends well fer anyone eh
btw (INTER)NATIONAL GREG GAMES BEST TOURNEY 2015
the parentheses never did make sense

Honestly, the ideas have become oversaturated. I’ve seen the same ideas used again, and again, and again. Nobody is willing to take a chance on something different.
Why doesn’t Kongregate host a money tournament? Why not invite people from another forum to compete? Why not host a series of smaller tournaments, where the winners play each other? Or a live competition, where the players submit a recording of the game to their YouTube channels and the player with the best time wins.
The tournaments are dead because no one is doing anything interesting.

That was the worst run tournament that I have ever participated in. I was embarrassed to be a part of it.
I put in 8 hours to get the top score and the host disqualified it without even telling me!
The (INTER)NATIONAL Greg Games was an absolute joke.

Money is too much of a risk when hacking is so easy and undetectable (if done right). I’ll be the first to say I’d hack a game for money. Think what you will of that, but a corporation like Kong running this event would be so ridiculously stupid of them that I’d at least want to teach a lesson. And money is a nice bonus.
For YouTube videos, everyone would have to be completely committed, know how to record/livestream, have a good enough computer, be on time… There’s so many variables and these situations only work with dedicated, professional players (like League and TF2). But, if all these prerequisites are met, tournies like that are always a hit. If someone is willing to do the work and there’s enough interest generated in the tourney and game, it certainly has a sufficient chance.

I disagree with this – we haven’t been using ideas as grand as those, but we’re far from only hosting vanilla tournaments. There’s actually been a tremendous amount of variance – T.B.A.C. had its own badge system and a fairly unique round system, G.T.N. was a team tournament, Rise & Fall was just totally different from anything else hosted so far, eProd’s tourney had three different houses, and Leb’s tourney was a bracket tournament where the competitors chose their own games. I’m going to go so far as to say that I doubt anything short of official promotion by Kong staff could reanimate tournaments, and we all know that won’t happen.

Even admins giving points and their own kreds didn’t help much. Well… I mean… I got like 20 points and 20 kreds. 20 points is too low for me to care and kreds are useless entirely. But still.

And if you mention Rise & Fall, you should also mention its corresponding “sequel”, Rage & Grace.
Also, TBAC’s round system wasn’t “fairly unique” — it had been used in at least Danaroth’s and Lou’s tournaments before that. The badge system (as well as the prizes, kinda) was what made it different from other tournies.

For some reason I forgot what Rage & Grace was called, sorry – I was more referring to that, since it’s a lot more recent than Rise & Fall. And perhaps I should have said fairly uncommon, not fairly unique.

The problem with tournaments is, as Blizzard says, so few people join now. The people that do join, have played the last dozen or more tournaments, so they’re already really good at the most commonly used games. On top of that, everything is taken really, really seriously.
a.k.a. it’s not fun for anyone that wants to do a tournament casually.

Read these comments if you think that gaming tourney interest is dead:
_evilsweetblock_
**“I see you are a very experienced gamer, and I just want to congratulate you real quick for making this tournament experience for the mass of us. I would like to join that said tournament if there is any open room, and test my hands at the glory of gaming.”**
_asher_
**I’d be interested in getting your video’s about kongregate tournaments, I think I’m decently well off currently, but I’d like to hear what you have to say that could possibly help me improve.**
Anybody still think it’s dead?! Tell you what, if you’d like to get involved in gaming competitions (and you’re willing to work for it) drop me a line. I’ll tell you EXACTLY how to start them up again, but I only want to talk to the motivated people. None of this ban shawner, best, blizzard, and everyone else crap!
If you’re willing to advertise this stuff and work with other people to rebuild the community, there’s no reason why you can’t have it back up and running within 3 weeks.
I really want to help, but I’m not going to waste my time!
Again, if you seriously care about this, PM me.

Competitions are supposed to be taken seriously. That’s the whole point.
When I compete against someone, I give absolutely everything that I’ve got. I want to be tested, I want be pushed, I want them to try to obliterate me, because that’s what I’m going to do to them if they don’t.
Hell, I use to travel from forum to forum looking for someone who _could_ beat me. I finally found that when I came here (hence, I haven’t left.)

I can’t really say this without looking like kind of a whiny bitch, but Josh, if you feel you have such a good idea about how to revive tournaments, why don’t you host it yourself? Unless I’m very much mistaken, nobody really 1) is ready and 2) has a potential claim on the next spot, except for maybe you (says delayed in the OP.) I’d be willing to help where needed, but as you apparently know EXACTLY how to start them up again, I feel you should hold the reins.

I really can’t commit the time to it, as much as I would like to. And I wouldn’t start off with another spreadsheet. But rather a forum vs forum competition. We need to rebuild the interest across the internet and get some new blood in here.
Here’s my idea in a nutshell.
Step 1: Get a group of Kong’s best gamers together (that or the most dedicated players.) These are the people who genuinely want to move forward with the competitions.
Step 2: We go onto other flash gaming websites and encourage some of the locals to build a team for themselves.
Step 3: The group of us challenge them to a match. We try to beat them at their own games (call it an “away game”) and then they can come to Kong and challenge us at our games (a “home game.”)
Step 4: Keep track of the results for who is winning and who is losing.
The whole idea is to network here, guys. :) We’re awesome at what we do, and they need to know it. More-over we want to share this idea with other people and let them experience it too!

Laughs, yeah I’m very arrogant by nature. :)
Sorry, I know I come off pretty strong.

I’ve already hosted a tournament not long ago but I still have a couple of ideas left to use, moreover competing with other communities might be interesting so if there are enough players still into this we could try to build something new up.

From what I can tell, the flash gaming tournaments have died across the web. Armor Games is obviously the best place to start, but we’re going to need to bring in people from other forums like Newgrounds (if this is going to survive long term.)
How about naming our team “The Kongregate Assassins”?

The kongregate tournaments are dying…they need to be revived. What better than a splash in the face with some ice cold water? Prepare yourselves. It’s coming.
