**What is a Kongregate Game Jam?**
Hey, some people have never participated in a game jam and might not know what it is!
Game jams are events for developers to create concepts, often based on a theme or idea, in a short span of time (typically a few days to a few weeks). What they build is completely up to them, all they have to consider is the theme or constraint of the game jam. Jammers can work in a team or individually on their games. When the game jam is over, they share their work and let anyone play their newly hashed games!
Our Kongregate Game Jam will be a one week game jam based on a theme (To be announced!) with several theme modifiers. The best games to come out of the jam will get small rewards and honors for their work!
**Participation/Joining**
Any individual or team who wants to! Stay updated in our Kongregate forums (right here)!
**Jam Theme**
Judges pick the theme and will be announced at the top of the post at the start of the jam!
The theme for the jam will be announced the moment the jam officially starts. Games are expected to stick to the theme, and how closely is up to you. Games that execute good design, artwork, and take into account the theme the strongest will be most eligible for honors and prizes.
**Modifiers**
We’ll also offer several modifiers that can enhance your game jam theme. It’s up to you whether or not use use the modifiers, they’re here to give you some challenges and ideas for making your game stand out, or just to try something new!
Example game theme: You are a boat
Modifier #1: Hey look, a dolphin!
Modifier #2: Orange the fruit, or the color
If you don’t want to participate in the modifiers, no worries. Modifiers are for your own benefit, it does not affect your ability to win an award.
* * *
**Requirements**
All games must be submitted to Kongregate.com through the specified link (above) and published before the end of the game jam. The game should be functional and running in-browser. You can submit early if you like. You can submit late, but you’ll be ineligible for prizes. And you’ll still be considered in-the-jam because we’re inclusive like that.
We don’t care what technology you use to build your game, but make sure it runs in the browser. Flash, Haxe, Unity, Gamemaker… it’s up to you!
Please, no executables or physical board games… we just don’t know how to play these or host these on Kongregate.
* * *
**Prizes and Honors**
All developers who participate in the game jam and submit a substantial game will get game jam bling on their profile. The top of each category will get a Kongregate T-shirt and a year of Kong Plus subscription. The 2nd and 3rd place of each category will get honorable mention, with a special game jam bling for their profiles.

**FAQ**
**How much does it cost to enter?**
It’s free!
**Is there a physical location or meetup for this event?**
There is not. This is an internet-hosted event. If you want to meet up with others to make games that’s on you.
**Can I recycle old code? Base libraries? What about leftover assets?**
The spirit of the competition is to build something awesome in 7 days from scratch. You’re free to use any base code or tools to get started, but abstain from using third-party assets. If you don’t have an artist and are worried about art, find one! We’ll make a careful judgement over what qualifies or not.
You do not have to show/share your code at the end of the jam. This is a trust exercise, please don’t break the rules.
**What if I’m late?**
Any game that is submitted late will be still included in the game jam but will not be eligible for honors. We like to be inclusive and we know some are just not on time.
**Who owns my project?**
You do. You made it, it’s yours.
**I don’t have a team how do I team?**
Please matchmake in a separate thread, preferably in the [Collaboration Forum](http://www.kongregate.com/forums/8-collaborations).
**Who do I email for private questions?**
You can PM jmtb02 (me). If they’re more broad questions, feel free to ask here.
**Can I start early? I have track practice…**
No! Start when the theme is announced.
**Will there be a future jam?**
Based on the participation of this jam we’ll consider doing additional ones, nowhere as a frequent as GiTD (a jam on Kongregate, if you don’t have time for this one!)
**Can I use Kongregate API’s for high scores, etc?**
Yes. You can leverage any Kongregate API in your game.

Does this mean that I cannot use a third party library like GreenSock for tweening?

Kongregate is handing out the awesome in buckets now.

Totally ok. This rule is geared towards third-party assets that remove a ton of the lifting in some incredulous way.

Because, who doesn’t like Grape Jelly? Needs to be a Kongpanion too!

I’ll bring the nut butter.

This sounds like fun, except I don’t understand why you’re not allowing third party graphics and audio. I can’t draw and I’d rather work independently.
Rather, I understand the reasoning, I just disagree.
Edit: also inb4 theme is Kongpanions

Neat! The dates for this happen to be after my exams, during my break from university!

So I can’t use images from copyright/royalty free websites?
Is it alright to include Kongpanions? I think that counts as not third-party. It’s second party. ;D
It looks like it is going to be gameplay \> graphics for me.
